Polyethylene fiber

Polyethylene (PE for short) belongs to the polyolefin family and, together with polypropylene, is the most widely produced plastic in the world. It owes this primarily to its flexible range of applications, comparatively low raw material costs and good processability. Depending on the manufacturing process and composition, a distinction is made between LDPE (low-density polyethylene) and HDPE (high-density polyethylene). The much stronger HDPE, which we carry in our range, is mainly used in plastic components, while LDPE is mainly used in films and packaging.

The good strength values, together with easy handling and low density, also make PE a very attractive starting material for fiber production.

Pros and cons
Polyethylene fiber Properties

Advantages

  • High strength
  • Particularly low density (specific weight)
  • Well-defined melting range, ideal for bonding/hot sealing

Disadvantages

  • Floats easily as density is lower than water
  • Limited temperature stability

Polyethylene fiber
Manufacturing process

Today, polyethylene is mainly produced by means of organometallic catalyzed polymerization. If only ethylene is used in the synthesis, the stronger HDPE (high density polyethylene) is obtained. If butene, hexene or octene are added through copolymerization, the significantly softer LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) is obtained. An older process for the production of PE is high-pressure gas-phase polymerization. In contrast to catalyzed polymerization, this does not produce straight chains, but branched polymers. As these are less able to crystallize together, this technique produces the softer LDPE (low denisty polyethylene). As with many other thermoplastics, the fibers are produced using the spinning process.
